Costly gifts could put doctors out of practice for up to a year - This proposal will be sent by MCI to the Union Health Ministry for approval this week.
No doubt, it attracts different comments from doctor community as follows :
- What is the motive behind this recommendation? The Government of India has certain stipulations on receving gifts and taxing them. Doctors or any other Indian citizens are alredy covered by it. Why another Bill targeted towards Doctors Only. Why should not a Doctor accept a costly gift as long as he doesn't compromise with his duties and Integrity. Why does not MCI bother to check on the ever mushrooming private medical colleges who accept huge donations upto to the tune of crores? Why does not MCI insist on only merit based admission to medical colleges? Why does not MCI insist on minimum guranted salary for any Dr who passes out of college? Mere banning the gifts would only add the existing vows of the Doctors!
- What is MCI/Government doing to prevent quacks/chemist from selling drugs over the counter without prescription, which is illegal. is this not causing harm to the patient's health and creating resistances to drugs. what the phrama companies are doing for sales is wrong, but the government is not doing any thing to stop quacks and pharma medical rep are also catering to them, because they provide them business. first , make it illegal for phrama companies to deal with these quacks. you are going after some one with qualification to practise medicine and putting all sorts of restriction on them. WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WITH OUT QUALIFICATION WHO PRESCRIBE ALLOPATHIC MEDICINES ? the pharma campanies making 200 to 600% profit. MCI/ government should go after them and reduce the cost of drug, which will benefit the common man.
- any regulation that restricts the freedom to take gifts is against the rights of indian citizen. its not bribery. it is the marketing ploy which can be permissable until it doesn't affect the other's rights. but how can any body monitor & judge this sensitive issue ? Beleiving that the medical profession is in the service category and it should maintain decency seems to be great ! but the ground reality is different which is strongly affecting the medical fraternity. this unilateral targeting of the doctors is some what not reasonable.
