press note released by DR.G.SAMARAM-NATIONAL PRESIDENT-IMA

Press Release -14th May, 2010
"The decision of Central Government, dissolving Medical Council of India and making it part and parcel of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare is highly objectionable" said Dr G Samaram, National President of IndianMedical Association in a press release.

He said this step is highly dangerous and damaging the standards of medical education and medical colleges. Till todayMCI autonomously working for uniform standards of medical education all over the country and if medical education and medical colleges are controlled by Government, politics certainly enter in the issues and the standard of medical education
and standard of medical colleges become substandard and totally politicide.

Dr Samaram demanded the Central Government to take back the decision and
keep the autonomous status of Medical Council and support for the quality medical
education all over the country.

Press Release
IMA opposes the Govt. attempt to dissolve MCI
New Delhi---15th May, 2010

Medical Council of India is an expert Body which is created through a Parliamentary Enactment titled “Indian Medical Council Act-1956” which is ‘autonomous” in character, entrusted with the task of “setting, maintaining and monitoring” the standards of medical education in the country.

The Council as a statutory body of experts is rightly and legitimately vested with the desired autonomy for discharge of the statutory obligations in an “objective, accountable and transparent” manner taking into consideration the specific “objectives” incorporated under the Act.

The Parliamentary Enactment formulated way back in 1956, is “complete” to an extent that only two amendments have taken place since its inception that too regarding the opening of new medical colleges and medical seats in various under graduates and post graduates courses with the prior approval of the Council and the 2nd amendment was to provide screening test for foreign medical graduates while being registered with MCI.

This sumptuously and sufficiently indicates the “intrinsic strength” of existing Indian Medical Council Act, by virtue of which it has stood the “Tests of Time”. The “Checks and Balances” judiciously incorporated have ensured that the Council is vested with the “Desired and the Required Autonomy” and yet is “Accountable to the Govt. of India and also to the Parliament”.

Indian Medical Association strongly opposes the decision of Govt. of India to dissolve MCI in the present scenario. We strongly feel that autonomy of MCI should be maintained and it should not be dissolved at any cost.

It has been the resolve of the UPA Govt. to retain the autonomy of all institutions of higher learning and professional education. This step is contradictory to their past decisions.

We urge the Prime Minister of India not to dissolve the autonomy of MCI rather take corrective measures in this regard.

Dr.G.Samaram Dr. Dharam Prakash.
National President. Hony. Secretary General

IMA should not support the corrupt MCI; how can MCI president has amassed crores of Rupees without the knowledge of the members of MCI? Has the IMA/ or any of its Big brothers received any part of that " dirty-cake" ? The multi crore Medical collage - business in India is being run by none other than the corrupt MCI.Otherwise how it is possible that MCI doesn't know about these half a crore to one crore donation business that is going on all these years in the private medical colleges in India? It is a big shame on the part of the IMA to support such a corrupt council. Has the corrupt IMC corrupted IMA as well? We need impartial enquiry on this angle as well.
